Federal High Court in Abuja convicts Chukwunyere Nwabuoku on multiple money laundering counts as EFCC secures major anti-corruption victory.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to 72 years in prison over a N868.4 million fraud.

Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Monday, March 23, 2026, after finding Nwabuoku guilty on multiple counts of money laundering. The conviction followed a trial prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to the EFCC, the former top government official was involved in laundering a total sum of N868,465,000 through various illegal financial transactions. The court held that the prosecution established its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The sentence, which spans several counts, underscores the gravity of the offences and the court’s stance on public sector corruption. Each count attracted separate prison terms, contributing to the cumulative 72-year sentence.

The ruling is being seen as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign, reinforcing efforts by law enforcement agencies to hold public officials accountable and deter financial crimes in government.
