The world 100m hurdles record holder showcased her sprinting versatility with a season-best time of 23.25 seconds, finishing second only to Olympic icon Elaine Thompson-Herah.

Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, has made a good start to her 2026 campaign.

Amusan finished second in the women’s 200m at the Velocity Fest in Jamaica. Widely known for her exploits in the hurdles, she showed her versatility on the track by clocking a season’s best time of 23.25 seconds.

The world star’s performance was enough to secure a second-place finish behind Jamaican sprint icon Elaine Thompson-Herah, who won the race in 22.61 seconds. Another Jamaican, Ackera Nugent, placed third with a time of 23.35 seconds in a competitive field.

The start of the season is encouraging for Amusan, as she continues to build form ahead of major international competitions. This is her first race since the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she was Nigeria’s sole medallist, claiming silver.

Amusan has been confirmed to participate this season in the Prefontaine Classic, where she will return to her specialty, the 100m hurdles, in Eugene on July 4. The event is part of the Diamond League series and will take place at Hayward Field, and is expected to feature one of the strongest fields in the discipline this season.

Amusan, who holds the world record of 12.12 seconds, is set to compete against reigning Olympic champion Masai Russell, two-time world champion Danielle Williams, and World Championships bronze medallist Grace Stark.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed significant success in Eugene in the past. She won her first world title and set her current world record at the venue during the 2022 World Championships, then returned to claim the Diamond League final title there in 2023.
