Pregnant Woman Hospitalised After Police Knock Down Motorcycle During Lagos Raid

Victim, returning from hospital visit, sustains injuries after patrol vehicle allegedly hits motorcycle during enforcement operation in Ajegunle

A pregnant woman, Zainab Bakare, is currently receiving medical treatment after she was allegedly knocked down by a police patrol vehicle during a raid on commercial motorcyclists in Lagos State.

The incident occurred at the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) Ajeromi Division during an operation against commercial motorcyclists along Layinka Street in the Ajegunle area.

Eyewitnesses said police officers had stationed their patrol vehicle at a junction in the community, waiting to arrest motorcyclists using the route. During the raid, a motorcycle conveying Bakare approached the junction.

In the course of the operation, the patrol vehicle reportedly rammed into the motorcycle, causing both the rider and Bakare, who was seated as a passenger, to fall to the ground.

A resident of the area, Moshood Oshunfurewa, said the incident happened at Layinka Street, near KD Bread and close to Arumoh Street. He stated that the officers hit the motorcycle from a short distance, causing the pregnant woman to fall and cry out in pain.

Bakare was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, while the officers allegedly took the motorcycle involved to the police station.

Speaking from her hospital bed, Bakare said she was returning from a hospital where her sister was in labour when the incident occurred.

“I was coming from the hospital where my sister was in labour. When we got to the T-junction, the motorcycle rider slowed down. Suddenly, a minibus hit us and we were knocked to the ground,” she said.

She sustained injuries and was left in severe distress over the safety of her pregnancy.
