Chibuzor Chinyere’s proposal of marriage with financial guarantees for his 21-year-old adopted daughter raises fresh ethical questions

The founder of Omega Power Ministries (OPM), Chibuzor Chinyere, has stirred public conversation after announcing plans to find a husband for his 21-year-old adopted daughter, Chiemeka Chibuzor, who is autistic.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the cleric revealed that he is actively seeking a suitable suitor and is prepared to provide a range of financial and welfare incentives to anyone willing to marry her. He said the move is aimed at securing her long-term care, protection, and happiness.

Chinyere described Chiemeka as able to speak and hear, adding that any interested man must be young and “physically and mentally fit in all forms.”

To support the proposed marriage, he pledged lifetime financial assistance, free accommodation, and a house to be jointly owned by the couple. He also stated that OPM officials would carry out periodic, unannounced visits to ensure the woman’s wellbeing is safeguarded.

According to him, the arrangement is designed to guarantee that she lives a stable and fulfilling life under proper care.

The development comes weeks after the pastor facilitated the widely publicised marriage of another autistic individual, a non-verbal man popularly known as Aboy, to an older woman on March 29.

That earlier union drew mixed reactions nationwide, with critics questioning issues around consent, dignity, and the broader ethics of arranging marriages for individuals with cognitive disabilities.

In response to the backlash, Chinyere gifted the groom—now renamed Elijah—a Lexus car, a plot of land, and appointed him as an ambassador for OPM’s free school for children living with autism and Down syndrome.

His latest announcement is already reigniting debate over the balance between care, autonomy, and the rights of vulnerable individuals.
