Defending champions falter in Group C opener as Chawinga sisters inspire historic win

Nigeria’s Super Falcons endured a nightmare start to their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign, falling 3–2 to tournament debutants Malawi in a stunning Group C opener in Morocco.

Widely regarded as one of the biggest upsets in WAFCON history, the result sent shockwaves across the tournament, as the nine-time champions were outplayed by a fearless Malawian side determined to make a statement on their debut.

After a cagey first half ended goalless, the match burst into life after the break. Malawi seized control with three quick goals, driven by the brilliance of sisters Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga, whose pace, creativity and clinical finishing proved too much for Nigeria’s defence.

Stunned but not broken, the Super Falcons responded late in the game, pulling back two goals in a spirited fightback. However, the rally came too late to overturn the deficit, as Malawi held on to secure a famous and well-deserved victory.
