INEC chairman says faith guided his decision to accept role, seeks nationwide prayers for credible 2027 elections

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has revealed that he accepted his appointment only after receiving what he described as a clear divine conviction.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday during an end-of-tenure thanksgiving service organised by the Nigerian Baptist Convention for its outgoing president, Israel Akanji, and his wife, Victoria, Amupitan said faith played a decisive role in his decision to lead Nigeria’s electoral body.

According to him, he would not have taken up the responsibility without what he believes was reassurance from God.

“I would not have accepted this job without conviction,” he said. “But I heard clearly: ‘Fear not, do not be dismayed. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you.’ That gave me the confidence to go ahead.”

Amupitan added that his experience so far in office has reinforced his belief that divine guidance is essential in leadership, stressing that he has relied on God to navigate challenges since assuming office.

“No matter the storm or difficulty, God is able to calm every storm. That is what I have experienced in this role,” he said.

He cautioned against taking on responsibilities without divine direction, noting that even service in ministry requires clear spiritual calling.

“If God does not send you somewhere, do not go there. I cannot do this on my own, but with God on my side, it is possible,” he stated.

The INEC chairman also called on Nigerians to support the commission with prayers, expressing optimism that the 2027 general elections would set a new standard.

“Continue to pray for Nigeria and for us. Pray that the 2027 elections will be the best ever. With God’s help, it is possible and achievable,” he said.
