TVC host recounts being forced on-air, battling self-doubt and stammering, and fighting back after career shake-ups

Popular Nigerian media personality Morayo Afolabi Brown has revealed the unlikely and challenging path that led her into television, admitting she never envisioned herself as a show host.

Speaking at the Refire Conference, Morayo opened up about her early struggles, career setbacks, and eventual rise in broadcasting. According to her, she initially preferred working behind the scenes and had no ambition to be in front of the camera.

She disclosed that self-doubt held her back for years, as she questioned her ability to speak fluently and dealt with a stammer. At the time, the plan was to recruit a professional presenter for the show, and she brought in writer Joy Isi Bewaji for the role.

However, events took an unexpected turn shortly before the programme was set to air. The selected host opted out to focus on writing, leaving the production team scrambling for a replacement. With no time to spare, Morayo was thrust into the spotlight and had to take on the role herself despite her fears.

That moment marked the beginning of her on-screen career. Over time, she found her footing, and the show grew in popularity, cementing her place in the media space.

But her journey was not without setbacks. Years later, Morayo revealed she was demoted and eventually removed from her role at Television Continental (TVC). The experience was frustrating, but she refused to back down, challenging the decision and standing firm on her contributions to the station’s growth.

Her story, she said, is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of pushing through fear and adversity.
