Ex-president’s allies deny purchase of nomination form, say silence is being exploited to mislead the public
Close associates of former President Goodluck Jonathan have firmly debunked reports linking him to the 2027 presidential race, stating there is no sign he intends to return to active politics.
The allies described the claims as politically motivated, accusing certain actors of using Jonathan’s name to push personal agendas and create unnecessary confusion ahead of the elections.
The rebuttal comes in response to assertions by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tanimu Turaki, which claimed that Jonathan had registered with the group, obtained nomination forms, and was screened and cleared as its presidential candidate.
However, one of Jonathan’s associates, a former minister, dismissed the claims as baseless. He stressed that if the former president had any intention of contesting, he would have made his position clear publicly.
According to him, any serious presidential aspirant would formally declare interest, align with a political platform, consult widely, build political structures, and participate transparently in the nomination and screening processes.
He further clarified that Jonathan neither purchased nor completed any nomination form, alleging that certain individuals merely procured forms and falsely attributed them to the former leader.
Despite the denials, the Turaki-led faction maintains that Jonathan remains its candidate, arguing that his silence should be interpreted as a deliberate political strategy.
The situation adds a fresh layer of intrigue to the unfolding 2027 political landscape, as speculation continues over whether Jonathan will eventually break his silence and state his position.
