Senior officials from both nations convene in Borno State to review counterterrorism operations and bolster regional security cooperation.

In a strategic move to deepen bilateral defence relations, the United Kingdom’s Deputy Chief of Defence Staff for Military Strategy and Operations has arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State, for high-level talks with Nigerian military commanders.

The visit, hosted at the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai, brought together senior defence officials from both countries to assess ongoing counterterrorism campaigns and address pressing regional security threats in the Lake Chad basin and the wider Sahel.

A key focus of the engagement was the UK’s renewed commitment to supporting Nigerian armed forces through enhanced training collaborations, intelligence-sharing frameworks, and targeted capacity-building programmes. British officials underscored their determination to help improve operational efficiency and tactical coordination in the North-East theatre, where troops have been battling a protracted Islamist insurgency for over a decade.

In response, the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai welcomed the UK delegation and praised the enduring partnership, emphasising that such exchanges are vital for boosting troop morale, fostering professional standards, and sustaining momentum in joint counterinsurgency efforts.

The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing defence relationship between Abuja and London, which has historically spanned counterterrorism cooperation, military education, and peacekeeping support. Both sides agreed to maintain regular strategic dialogues and explore new avenues for technical assistance and equipment modernisation.

The visit signals continued international solidarity with Nigeria’s security forces as they work to stabilise the North-East and curb extremist violence that threatens civilian populations and regional stability.
