27-year-old Qudus Ajeyemi to be deported after serving sentence; placed on sex offenders register for life

A UK court has sentenced a Nigerian student, Qudus Ajeyemi, to five and a half years in prison after he was found guilty of attempting to rape and sexually assault an intoxicated woman in Hull.

Ajeyemi, 27, popularly known as “Spartan,” was convicted following a six-day trial at Hull Crown Court over an incident that occurred in early 2023.

The court heard that the victim had gone to a residence on Tavistock Street after a night out but became unwell due to alcohol consumption. Ajeyemi, who was living on May Street on a student visa at the time, offered to take her upstairs to rest.

Prosecutors said the woman expected to be left alone but was instead subjected to unwanted advances. Despite clearly resisting and telling him she was not interested, Ajeyemi continued the assault until she managed to push him away and escape downstairs in distress.

She later broke down in tears in the living room, where others present noticed her condition. Ajeyemi reportedly entered the room and questioned her, despite being aware of what had occurred.

The case was strengthened by evidence showing that Ajeyemi later contacted the victim via FaceTime, admitted to his actions, and sent multiple messages expressing remorse and seeking forgiveness. The victim preserved these communications and reported the incident to police in March 2023.

Following an investigation by Humberside Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People Unit, Ajeyemi was arrested and charged.

In addition to his prison term, the court ordered that he be deported to Nigeria upon release. He has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and handed a seven-year restraining order.

Detective Sergeant Ethan Anderson, who led the investigation, commended the victim’s courage, noting the difficulty many face in reporting such crimes. He stressed that authorities remain committed to supporting victims and ensuring offenders are brought to justice.
