23-year-old Nnani Adaobi Marian dies after days in critical care following Kharkiv bombing; friend killed instantly en route to graduation photoshoot

A 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died from injuries sustained in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine—just days before she was due to celebrate her graduation.

Adaobi, a student of Kharkiv National Medical University, was critically wounded on June 29, 2026, when Russian forces carried out an aerial bombardment on the Kholodnohirskyi district of the city. She was initially treated in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for advanced care, where doctors continued efforts to save her life.

Despite intensive medical intervention, she died on Sunday, July 5.

Her university confirmed her death in an emotional statement, describing her as “bright, sincere and kind-hearted,” with a deep passion for learning and a genuine desire to help others.

“She easily found common ground with people and was distinguished by her thirst for knowledge, hard work and sincere desire to help others,” the statement read.

According to officials, Adaobi sustained severe injuries during the attack. Medical teams in both Ukraine and Germany fought to save her, but she ultimately succumbed.

The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office also confirmed her death, extending condolences to her family and loved ones while noting that doctors battled tirelessly for her survival.

Adaobi had been studying medicine at the university since 2020 and had built an impressive academic profile, completing internships at the University of Cambridge and Biruni University in Turkey.

Tragically, at the time of the strike, she and a friend, Fatima Huseynova, were on their way to a photoshoot ahead of their graduation ceremony. Fatima was killed at the scene, while Adaobi was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

At least 12 other people were injured in the airstrike, underscoring the continued toll of the war on civilians.

Adaobi’s death has sparked grief and outrage, highlighting the devastating human cost of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine—particularly for foreign students caught in the crossfire while pursuing their dreams.
