Officer accused of fatally shooting suspect in viral video arrested and moved to Abuja as outrage mounts over alleged extrajudicial killing.
The Delta State Police Command has acknowledged it has no definitive explanation for the actions of an officer seen in a viral video fatally shooting a suspect in Effurun, an incident that has triggered widespread condemnation over alleged extrajudicial killing.
Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, made the admission during a live appearance on Channels Television on Wednesday, describing the case as one of the most perplexing he has encountered in his six years in the role.
Edafe said the command is still grappling with what could have led to the officer’s conduct, adding a controversial dimension by suggesting that while the police cannot officially attribute the act to spiritual factors, “it may not be far from it.”
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when police operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command acted on intelligence from the public. The victim, identified as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, was reportedly intercepted while attempting to waybill a parcel said to contain a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
According to police accounts, the team was deployed to arrest the suspect. However, the officer in charge, identified as Nuhu Usman, allegedly breached Force Order 237 and established operational procedures by opening fire, resulting in the suspect’s death.
The command confirmed that Usman has since been arrested and transferred to Abuja for further investigation, while internal disciplinary proceedings are ongoing.
The disturbing footage of the shooting has fueled public outrage on social media, intensifying demands for accountability and reform within the Nigeria Police Force.
Reaffirming its position, the police condemned extrajudicial killings and assured the public that due process would be strictly followed in the handling of the case.
