Ex–Vice President Accuses Electoral Body of Bias, Vows Opposition Resistance Over ADC Leadership Crisis

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has issued a stern warning to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), declaring that he would “not get away” with actions he described as dangerous to Nigeria’s democracy.

Atiku made the remarks during the African Democratic Congress (ADC) national convention held in Abuja, where he accused the electoral commission of compromising its neutrality and allegedly being used to influence internal party affairs.

He alleged that INEC, under its current leadership, is engaging in actions that undermine democratic principles, insisting that the opposition will not stand by while such developments unfold.

According to him, opposition forces in the country are prepared to resist any attempt to weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions, drawing parallels with the collective struggle that ended military rule.

Atiku’s comments were particularly directed at INEC’s handling of the ongoing leadership dispute within the ADC, which has sparked internal tensions and legal arguments over recognition of party executives.

The former Vice President accused the commission of bias and illegalities in its decisions regarding the party crisis, further escalating criticisms already being levelled against the electoral body.

The controversy comes amid growing political tension between opposition leaders and INEC, with increasing debates over the commission’s neutrality and credibility ahead of the 2027 general elections.
