TikTok video by young woman identified as Mirabel draws sympathy, NGO and police interest, while emerging contradictions fuel public debate

A young woman identified as Mirabel has ignited intense public debate after posting an emotional video on TikTok on Monday, alleging that she was raped by a stranger in her apartment. The video quickly went viral, drawing sympathy, outrage, and calls for justice across social media.

In the video, Mirabel claimed she struggles with insomnia and often drinks alcohol to help her sleep. She alleged that after becoming tipsy, she heard a knock on her door and opened it, only to be forcefully pushed aside by a man. According to her account, she lost consciousness and later woke up to find a strange man on top of her, with her mouth covered so she could not shout.

Mirabel further alleged that after the incident, the suspected attacker sent her a direct message online, stating that she was “right” and that he had to “cut” her—a message that added to the shock and anger surrounding the case.

As the story gained traction online, many users visited Mirabel’s social media pages and claimed to discover that she is an orphan with no immediate family support. The revelation intensified public sympathy, with activists, feminists, and concerned individuals rallying around her. Several non-governmental organisations reportedly reached out to offer help, while the police and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (LagosDSVA) were also said to have shown interest in the case.

Public concern escalated further after a friend of Mirabel commented under her post, alleging that she had later consumed a harmful substance in an attempt to take her own life and was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. Despite donations and offers of assistance pouring in, Mirabel was said to have avoided physical contact with those trying to help her.

According to screenshots shared by an individual identified as Vampz, an NGO arranged to meet Mirabel and her friend to provide support. However, it was alleged that both stopped responding to calls when the organisation arrived at the agreed location.

Popular social media commentator VeryDarkMan later released a video of a phone conversation with Mirabel, claiming she had been discharged from the hospital. He said arrangements were being made for her to travel to Abuja for a comprehensive medical examination.

However, the narrative took a controversial turn when a TikTok influencer publicly questioned the credibility of Mirabel’s claims. He alleged inconsistencies in her story, including similarities between Mirabel’s writing style and that of the alleged attacker who sent the DM. He dismissed the account as false and accused her of seeking clout.

Adding to the controversy, a man who claimed to live in the same apartment complex alleged that the building is rarely empty on Sundays, contradicting Mirabel’s version of events. He also claimed she had told people she recently lost her mother to solicit donations, only for him to later learn that her mother reportedly died last year.

Despite the growing doubts, Mirabel’s friend has continued to appeal to the public for financial support on her behalf.

As of now, many Nigerians are awaiting confirmation on whether Mirabel will meet with VeryDarkMan for the proposed medical check-up in Abuja, though skepticism remains over whether the appointment will be honoured.

For now, the case remains unresolved, with authorities yet to release an official statement and the public divided between calls for justice and questions over the truthfulness of the allegations.
