Teenage sabre star becomes Nigeria’s highest-ever ranked junior fencer, placing 10th in the latest FIE world rankings

Nigeria’s fencing sensation, Inkosi Brou, has made history by becoming the first Nigerian to break into the world’s Top 10 junior fencers, marking a major milestone for the sport in the country.

According to the latest rankings released by the International Fencing Federation (FIE), the 18-year-old is now ranked 10th in the men’s junior sabre category globally.

With 68.750 ranking points, Brou is currently the second-highest ranked African junior fencer, trailing only Egypt’s Ahmed Hesham, who sits seventh with 76.000 points.

Despite exiting in the quarter-finals at the 2026 African Junior Fencing Championships in Dakar, Brou’s impressive performances across the season, including a sixth-place finish at the 2026 FIE World Cup in Dakar, were enough to propel him into the elite global bracket.

Brou, who began representing Nigeria internationally in October 2023, is the grandson of former NAFDAC Director-General, Professor Dora Akunyili.

He has already etched his name in Nigeria’s sporting history, winning the country’s first-ever global men’s sabre medal — a silver medal at the World Tournoi Satellite Cup in Iceland — and followed it up with a bronze medal at the 2025 African Junior Championships in Luanda.

Earlier in his career, at just 16 years old, Brou also became the first Nigerian to be selected for the All-American Fencing First Team in the United States.

Reacting to the achievement, Nigeria Fencing Federation President, Adeyinka Samuel, described Brou’s rise as a major boost for fencing in Nigeria, noting that it signals the country’s growing presence on the global fencing stage.
