CFRPA demands clarity on Chicago State University certificate, warns of legal action if electoral body fails to respond

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is under renewed scrutiny over the lingering controversy surrounding his academic credentials, following a formal petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) seeking clarification on his eligibility for future elections.

The Center for Reform and Public Advocacy (CFRPA) has written to INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, urging the commission to address questions tied to documents submitted by Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election—particularly those relating to his Chicago State University certificate.

The group stressed that resolving the issue is critical as Nigeria begins to look toward the 2027 general elections. It is requesting an official position from INEC on the status and legal implications of the President’s academic records.

In its petition, CFRPA warned that it may initiate legal proceedings if the electoral body fails to provide a public response within a reasonable timeframe.

Debate over Tinubu’s academic history has persisted since the last election cycle, drawing reactions from opposition figures and civil society organisations. While critics continue to question aspects of the records, the President and his allies have consistently maintained that he meets all constitutional requirements to hold office.
