Sacked Finance Minister Wale Edun Breaks Silence, Defends Reforms and Thanks Tinubu

Ousted minister highlights economic gains, says Nigeria is on a stronger path despite unfinished reforms

Former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has spoken publicly for the first time following his removal by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve while defending the administration’s economic reforms.

In a statement released hours after his sack, Edun thanked President Tinubu for entrusting him with key roles since the beginning of the administration in May 2023, including leading the Presidential Transition Committee, serving as Special Adviser on Monetary Policy, and later as Finance Minister.

Reflecting on his tenure, Edun described his time in office as a privilege, noting that he stepped into the role at a period when Nigeria faced severe economic challenges. He said the administration, under Tinubu’s leadership, implemented critical reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and restoring fiscal balance.

According to him, these efforts yielded measurable progress, with economic growth rising from about 2 percent to over 4 percent, while inflation declined significantly from 35 percent to 15 percent. He attributed these improvements to coordinated policy actions, increased investor confidence, and a commitment to inclusive growth.

Edun also praised collaboration across different levels of government and with private sector stakeholders, stating that the reforms laid a solid foundation for long-term economic stability, even though more work remains.

He extended appreciation to both local and international partners for their support during his time in office and expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic future.

While acknowledging that reform is an ongoing process, Edun said he remains committed to national service and wished his successor success in continuing efforts to improve the lives of Nigerians.
