Tinubu Tackling Insecurity Beyond Religion, Says UN Envoy Jimoh Ibrahim

Ambassador urges global actors to avoid oversimplifying Nigeria’s crisis as purely religious, highlights reforms and international cooperation

Nigeria’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has defended the Tinubu administration’s handling of insecurity, pushing back against claims that the country’s challenges are primarily driven by religious conflict.

Speaking amid growing national and international concern, Ibrahim stressed that Nigeria’s security crisis is far more complex, rooted in widespread instability across regions rather than a singular religious divide. He cautioned against framing the situation through a narrow lens, noting that such narratives risk misrepresenting the true nature of the crisis.

The envoy maintained that President Bola Tinubu’s government is actively pursuing a multi-pronged strategy to address insecurity, combining security sector reforms, diplomatic engagement, and strengthened collaboration with global partners.

He also called on foreign governments, institutions, and observers to approach Nigeria’s situation with a deeper understanding of its complexities, warning that oversimplification could undermine ongoing efforts to restore stability.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Ibrahim said authorities are intensifying coordinated actions to stabilize affected areas, promote national cohesion, and deliver long-term solutions to insecurity.

His remarks come as debates continue both locally and internationally over rising violence, intercommunal tensions, and the broader security landscape in Nigeria.
