Institution condemns corporal punishment, launches probe as video sparks outrage online

 Kwara State Polytechnic has suspended a lecturer captured in a viral video flogging students who reportedly arrived late for their examinations, as public backlash intensifies over the incident.

The institution confirmed the disciplinary action in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Hajia Halimat Garba, following the widespread circulation of the footage on social media.

According to the Polytechnic, the individuals seen in the video were not its regular students but candidates of the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB), currently sitting for their examinations at the institution.

“The attention of the Kwara State Polytechnic management has been drawn to a viral video showing a lecturer physically reprimanding students,” the statement said.

While noting that the motive behind the lecturer’s actions remains unclear, the management strongly condemned the conduct, describing it as unacceptable and contrary to the institution’s standards.

“The approach taken was wholly inappropriate, as the Polytechnic stands firmly against any form of violence or physical punishment as a means of discipline,” the statement added.

Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful academic environment, the management emphasized that discipline should be enforced through constructive and humane methods.

“Education should be rooted in respect, understanding, and constructive guidance. There are far more effective and humane ways to instill values in students,” it stated.

The lecturer has been suspended with immediate effect pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

Management also assured the public and stakeholders that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness, with measures to be introduced to prevent a recurrence.

It further reiterated confidence in the institution’s longstanding values, stressing that the incident does not reflect the ethos of Kwara State Polytechnic.
