INEC says election planning continues under current law, urges stakeholders to support transparent and credible polls.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its readiness to conduct the 2027 general elections, despite delays in the passage of the amended Electoral Act by the National Assembly.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, disclosed on Wednesday in Abuja that the commission has finalized the election timetable and schedule of activities during a briefing with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).
Sworn in as INEC Chairman in October 2025, Prof. Amupitan stated that the commission has submitted proposals to the National Assembly for key amendments to the Electoral Act. However, he acknowledged that the delay in enacting the changes could affect parts of the planned electoral calendar.
“For now, the commission has no choice but to rely on the subsisting Electoral Act to guide its preparations and operations,” he said.
Prof. Amupitan emphasized that INEC remains committed to planning elections under the current legal framework while urging all stakeholders to support efforts toward credible, transparent, and timely elections in 2027.
